もっともよく知られた大型の翼竜です。プテラノドンは大きなトサカが特徴で大型のものは頭部の長さが１８０ｃｍもありました。トサカのない化石も見つかっていますが、おそらく性別の違いからくるものだと考えられています。その立派なトサカは求愛の誇示、または飛行の際、舵取りや安定板の働きをしていたといわれています。プテラノドンの生息した白亜紀後期は翼竜類はあまり姿を見せなくなり、鳥類が空の支配者でした。それでもプテラノドンは空の王者でしょう。 (English Adaptation) The most famous of the flying reptiles, Pteranodon had a large crest up to 180 cm, which probably functioned like an airplain's tail fin in the air. However, a fossil without a crest was also found, that implies it had depeloped only in male to atract female.
