初めて完全な顎を持ち獲物を積極的に追いかけるように なった古生代の棘魚類（硬骨魚類を生み出す祖先）の 仲間で、クリマチウスは最初に現れた棘魚類です。 小さな体にはトゲのようなヒレがたくさん並んでいて、 大きな捕食者から身を守ったと考えられています。 Climatius were the first Paleozoic fishes with well-developed jaws, class Acanthodii (ancestor of Osteichthyes), and the active hunter to catch their prey.
